PUBLIC EAST LANSING: Just after 9 a.m. today, the Ingham County 911 Center received a single call on a non-emergency line reporting activity consistent with a potential act of violence at East Lansing High School (ELHS). The information provided by the caller was detailed and raised immediate concern but was suspicious in nature.

Officers from the East Lansing Police Department and the Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety responded quickly. Upon arrival, officers determined that the conditions on scene did NOT match the caller’s report.

Out of an abundance of caution, a coordinated response involving multiple law enforcement agencies remained in place as officers thoroughly checked the school building to ensure the safety of all students and staff.

A unified command post was established with all of the agencies involved, along with representatives from the school district. Information about students was shared with parents directly by East Lansing Public Schools.

At this time, there is no confirmed threat to the school or the community. Based on the information currently available, this incident is believed to be a false report, commonly referred to as “swatting.”

ELHS students have now been dismissed for the day; other East Lansing schools have returned to normal operations.
