Suffolk County Residents — Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services is sharing these Heat Safety Tips & Information to keep you safe.
As the day begins to heat up, here are some quick reminders to help you beat the heat. Please review and share these guidelines with friends, family, and neighbors:
Recognize Heat Illness
Heat Exhaustion – heavy sweating, weakness, cool/clammy skin, rapid pulse, nausea
Move to a cool place, loosen clothing, apply cool cloths, sip water.
Heat Stroke (call 911) – body temp above 103 °F, hot/red skin, rapid pulse, possible unconsciousness
Call 911 immediately, move to a cooler area, lower body temperature with cool cloths—do not give fluids.
Beat the Heat Tips
Hydrate Often: Drink water regularly—don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
Seek A/C or Shade: Spend time in air-conditioned spaces, libraries, malls, or designated Cooling Spaces.
Dress Smart: Wear loose, light-colored, breathable clothing and wide-brimmed hats.
Plan Around Peak Heat: Schedule strenuous activity for early morning or evening.
Check on Vulnerable Neighbors: Older adults, young children, and those with medical conditions are at higher risk.
